Single Elimination Tournament Format
This weekend’s tournament will follow a single elimination format. Once a team loses a match, their season is complete. Only the winning teams from Saturday’s games will advance to play on Sunday. On Sunday, teams will continue to advance through each round as long as they keep winning, with the final two teams competing for the championship in the Finals.

Tournament Weekend Schedule
Saturday, November 2
  • 4th/5th Grade Division: All 8 teams will compete. Winners advance to the Finals on Sunday.
  • 6th–8th Grade Division (Regular): Only the bottom 4 seeded teams will play on Saturday. The top 2 seeded teams automatically advance to Sunday’s Finals.
Sunday, November 3
  •  Finals for all divisions:
    • 4th/5th Grade Division (advancing teams from Saturday)
    • 6th–8th Grade Division (top 2 seeds and Saturday winners)
    • 2nd/3rd Grade and 6th–8th Grade Select Divisions will only play on Sunday in their final tournament.

West Austin Volleyball is teaming up with HCI Sports and Fitness.  Together we are offering a recreational volleyball league for grades 2nd-8th.  If you are new to our league, please click here to determine if this recreational league is a good match for your child.

Leagues will be offered in the spring beginning on February 23 , with one practice during the week (Mon or Wed) and games played on Sunday afternoon.  The first game will be March 1st.  We will NOT meet for games or practices during spring break or Easter.  

We will continue to offer a Select League for grades 6th - 8th grade.  For our Select league players  we offer an extended practice time to 90 minutes!!!!  You must register and attend a tryout.  If not selected, player will automatically be transferred to our recreational league if registered before registration closes.  This program is NOT intended for beginners.  HCI will refund the difference between the 2 leagues less the $40 tryout fee.

It's important to accurately select the skill level that best describes your child so that HCI can form teams with a balanced mix of all skill levels. This helps avoid situations where one team ends up with all beginners and another with all advanced players. By evenly distributing skills across each division, coaches can provide appropriate training, and each player can develop at the right pace while feeling supported and challenged among teammates of varying but complementary abilities.
 
​Below you will find a detailed description of each volleyball skill level:

1. New Players: 0-6 months of experience or no prior experience
  • Experience: These players are new to volleyball, either just starting within the past 6 months or have never played before.
  • Skills: They are in the early stages of learning the game and need to develop a basic understanding of volleyball rules and techniques.
  • Focus: Primary focus is on learning the fundamental skills such as passing, setting, serving (usually starting with underhand serves), and basic movement on the court.
  • Goal: Build comfort with ball control and basic movements, while fostering enthusiasm for the sport.

2. Beginners: Some prior experience but still developing basic skills
  • Experience: These players have some experience, likely having played in casual settings or beginner-level teams before. They are familiar with the game but still require improvement in most areas.
  • Skills: They have a general understanding of the basic volleyball skills—passing, setting, hitting, and serving—but still need substantial development. Most can serve underhand, but overhand serving is either inconsistent or undeveloped.
  • Focus: Emphasis on refining each of the core skills, improving consistency, and transitioning to more advanced techniques, like overhand serves. The focus remains largely on individual skill development.
  • Goal: Gain consistency in serving, improve accuracy in passing, and develop better court awareness.

3. Intermediates: Mastery of basic skills and ready for advanced challenges
  • Experience: These players have a solid background in volleyball and have likely played for at least a year or more. They have mastered the basics and are now ready to be challenged with more advanced play.
  • Skills: They can consistently perform all the basic skills—passing, setting, hitting, and overhand serving. They can serve overhand with consistency and accuracy, and they can pass to a target reliably. Their ball control and overall technique are well developed.
  • Focus: At this level, there is little focus on teaching basic skills, as they have already been mastered. Instead, the emphasis is on refining advanced techniques, strategy, and teamwork. These players can begin working on more complex plays and game strategies.
  • Goal: Strengthen team play, improve tactical awareness, and prepare for competitive matches.
